8 Pro Tips for Writing a Good Cover Letter for Freelancers 2023

So you’ve worked hard at creating a snazzy profile and now you want to start bidding on jobs. But an employer probably wont even consider looking at it unless you impress them with a good cover letter.

When it comes to applying for a job writing a good cover letter is the single most important factor in your application. It is your tool  for getting ahead of the competition and showing the employer that you are the best person for the job.

Writing a cover letter can be a bit intimidating at the start, so below are the top 5 pointers on what to include in your cover letter and how to make it stand out and I have also provided links to other blogs & articles for further tips and advice.

1. Read the job description carefully

Before you start writing your cover letter, take a few moments to read the job description again to understand what the employer is looking for. An employer will be able to tell if you have read his job listing properly.

2. Don’t use the same cover letter for different job applications

It’s never a good idea to reuse the same letter for different jobs, even if you change some of the details. Write a new, unique cover letter each time you apply for a new job.

3. Pay attention to the employer’s requests

If the employer asks for specific questions to be answered in their application process, make sure you answer them all fully and honestly.

4. Always state your availability

Let the employer know how many hours a day/week/month you can dedicate to his/her project.

5. Ask Questions

Again, this lets the employer know you have read the job description thoroughly and presents an opportunity for direct contact with the employer.

6. Provide Links

If your website or blog contains samples of your previous work you should provide links to these.

7. Be Honest

As with your resume, you should never exaggerate your skills or experience. An employer will soon found out that you fibbed in the application process.

8. Re-read your application

Once you are happy with the tone and content of your letter, check it for typos and grammar. Read your letter aloud from start to finish to ensure that it reads well.

Now that you are happy with all aspects of your application letter, cross your fingers and hit the send button.  Following the tips above will help you put your best foot forward.
